So my wife just got a 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid and likes it a LOT. Except for the deep window tint. Is there any way to remove it? My understanding is that aftermarket and old window tints are just peelable plastic that you can remove with a heat gun or solvent. But factory window tints are really tinted glass. So what are the options here, if any?
I think that she should just wait a while as factory tints are not that dark . I would guess in a month the tinted windows will be a non-issue . If she still does not like it after a month talk to the dealer to see what tint shop they use to see what can be done.
As @VOLVO-V70 said, factory tints are not very dark and it is IN the glass. If you live in a sunny place, dealers often tint cars as they come on the lot. That tint is a film placed on the inside of fhe window.
It is easily removed by spraying a water and dish soap mix on the inside of fhe glass, covering it with black trash bag plastic and letting it sit in the bright sun for 1/2 hour or so. Then it easily peels off.
You might take it to a window tint shop and ask them.
Also be mindful of any risks to your brand new factory warranty. Not sure how much of a risk that is…but it’d certainly be on my mind, should you ever have any window motor problems, etc.
That makes no sense. If the tint is IN THE GLASS (as in, part of the glass), how do you peel it off? Do you mean on the INSIDE of the glass?
I think what was meant was that Theresa’s a factory tint as part of the glass and can’t be removed without replacing the glass. If in a hot climate, the dealer could have added additional tint that would be a film also on the inside of the glass. That film could be removed. Normally the front side windows are not tinted much but the rear windows are much darker. I guess talk to the dealer to see if they added a film.
Factory glass is tinted by adding color into the glass as it is formed.
The dealer likely added a tinted film on the inside surface of the glass to further tint the windows. That can be removed. The factory tint cannot.
I think this is just not bought vehicle, they had a post where they said they bought a Civic Hybrid Nov. 2024.
Why is Doug not asking the dealer or even looking at their paper work if Tint Film was added? If not asking dealer at least see a tint shop for possible solutions.
Open one of the windows and look at the top edge. If there is professionally applied film, you will see a small gap at the top of the glass where the film ends. This is done to avoid the weatherstripping from peeling back the film. It looks like this although the gap size may vary:
OK, so the answer is MAYBE there is removable tint and MAYBE there isn’t. Yes, I could ask the dealer, but I was just curious if this was a model-specific attribute. Yes, I suppose it depends on where the car is sold. Down here in Texas, it wouldn’t surprise me if they added some paste-on tint. Now, my wife just tells me that she asked the dealer about the tint, and he said that ALL cars sent to Texas have a heavy tint, and he seemed to suggest that it couldn’t be removed. That would suggest that the car windows are manufactured differently, depending on the sales point.
I guess you could just go to a glass shop for a price on replacing the glass with northern glass. I’m guessing a couple thousand but save the old glass because you might want to put it back again.
One June we had been to padre island and the temp was 104. I had a new olds and the car had been sitting for a few hours. We headed back north to Minnesota with the air conditioner on full blast and it was at least 100 miles for the car to get comfortable again. So just aying careful what you wish for. It gets hot down there and window tint helps keep the car cooler.
My trucks rear door glass and rear window are all factory installed dyed glass, while the front doors had tint added after bought, I am one that does not see well in the dark, I have to have lights on in the house when bright and sunny outside, shadows bother my sight bad, but I found I can see well out my tinted windows, so as said already, give them a chance… imho…
That is because it gets hot there . I don’t understand what the problem is
If I may ask, is there a reason you want the tint removed?
Driving at night is difficult?
aesthetics?
Yeah, agree with this statement.
Having spent some time in Texas and Arkansas, I see a lot of value in window tint to help keep the sun temperature down. I wouldn’t think factory window tint would make night driving too difficult.
I’m skeptical of the dealer’s statement. Honda builds their cars with trim levels and I don’t think that window tint is part of that. Where I live tinting the windshield is illegal. Call the Honda corporate offices and ask them if they assemble cars with different tint levels in the windshield. Another possibility is that Honda installs the tint film before dealers get the cars.
My wife’s vision is such that she doesn’t see well in the dark. Even in the daytime, things just look too dark to her through those windows. She doesn’t drive at night. Let’s not try to second guess rationale or try to argue it away. She doesn’t like the tint, and that’s what counts. Looking back at the Buyers Order, she evidently paid $299 for “tint”. Why? Because that’s the car that was on the lot. Not sure if that means the tint was applied as an add-on.
You could have mentioned that in your original post . If this vehicle can’t be made to suit her problem then it is time to look for something else .
My mom’s vision improved dramatically after having cataract surgery
Just saying
