I got that message, as did several other long term forum members. It’s not just you.
I got this, too.
You are uniquely bad.
No, I responded to the Indy thread and had to wait until now to see that my post was approved.
Just This Once, you’re off the hook.
Same for me, including this reply!
Hi guys, I got the message last night from Julie about post approvals. I don’t know much more than that it’s said to be necessary to control the spam for now. I will do the best I can to keep up, and will talk to John. Not gonna lie, it is unfortunate for the forum.
I thought that might be the case. Hope things can be sorted out.
I think site could filter replies and post from >1yr members immediately.
For obvious reason I like the post approval requirement. Now the Mod can decide whether or not to approve insults aimed at me
Not to worry, I am sure all insults aimed at you will be approved… L L . . .
There was a 7 hour gap between posts today. That must mean that there was not an approval person on duty. If someone who posts at midnight is not going to have their post approved until 7 or 8 the next morning ? If they have a real vehicle question they most likely will just go some where else. New posters with questions actually expect their question posted then and hope for a timely reply this will not do that . Might as well put operating hours on the forum . Such as Open 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM EST.
I know it’s annoying and it’s slowing down access, but as I understand it it’s not intended to be forever. I know that the casual user who comes here and has to wait may not come back, but it doesn’t mean this is the way it will be forever. I agree that if it’s a long term thing, it will be very detrimental to the health of the forum.
I will take the trade off to prevent the spammers from having open access to the forums. Let’s not be cranky old people and complain about a change that actually has a good reason behind it.
Part of that would be if it takes hours for post approval, then someone might ask a question and then 5 or more of us will ask or say the same thing… No one will know what anyone has asked or said until hours later… It can/will be aggravating for any regular poster as well as new members…
But as the old saying goes, it is what it is...
Someone needs to make a banner type announcement that gives a reason for this approval of posts. I think it would be less irritating if the site actually shut down and said it will be back up in X number of days for improvments.
While I understand the reasons why this step was taken, for the purpose of reducing/eliminating spam posts, the nightly shutdown is not good for those who want a question answered after the site’s new operating hours.
Obviously, keeping someone on payroll overnight will add to the cost of running the site, so–as Carolyn stated–I hope that this new policy is short-lived, and that some other approach can be implemented in order to combat spamming.
Long-term, this new policy will not allow it to grow.
I tend to agree with Volvo on this one, what is the difference in the site shutting down with an explanation at night and needing help and not getting it, vs the site being up with NO explanation (other than searching through threads) as to why NO threads are being replied to?? Either way until this is fixed, no one asking for help will be answered until an admin is able to approve any post made…
I guess forums have changed or something, but I used to set a limit for new posters that had to be approved by an admin so any (most) spam was caught before being posted, it did not affect any member with x amount of post (1, 2, 5 whatever) and or time frame… If ALL new members and their 1st (few) post had to be approved by an admin, that spam attack last week would have never happened, at least as far as non admin were concerned…
Just my thoughts…
Time posted 9:39 cst…
That would be fine if this was the only way to solve the problem. But it’s not and there are a number of other solutions that don’t require this type of moderation. Some of which have been mentioned…likely, there is no one familiar with the coding necessary to effect the change
There is a payroll? I thought they were volunteers.
The previous frequency of visits of moderators was twice weekly to title Ask Someone treads. Checking in twice each day is “overtime”.
