One thing besides going ballistic on the steering wheel would be setting the parking/emergency brake while in drive, then putting the car in park.
And when parking and turning off the engine, first make sure the front wheels are more or less straight ahead, the steering wheel has some free play in both direction, and the front wheels are not pressed tight against the curb.
If whaling on the steering wheel leaves you breathless but not no start, try juggling the lever for the gears. Sometimes my car isn’t quite in park & as soon as I jiggle it into “real” park, it starts right up!
