Oil in cylinder

I have always heard that oil should be added to each cylinder before starting up a car that has sat for a long time without starting. I am about to help a friend with a Miata that has sat for a year. How much oil goes in each cylinder, and how long should you wait before startup. Plus, what oil?
Recommendations, please.

But if you’re looking for that warm and fuzzy feeling, spray some fogging oil into the cylinders.
