I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu, automatic transmission. When I put it in reverse and then press the gas pedal, I get a rather loud grinding noise for a couple of seconds. What is causing this, and is it doing any real damage? I have no other problems with the transmission.
I think I would find a reputable transmission shop and avoid using reverse.
Concur w/@Hokiedad, likely a transmission problem. Continuing to use reverse may make the repair even more expensive than it would be if you fixed it immediately.
There’s some slight chance it’s not the xmission too. Could be the engine mounts are on the fritz, causing some alignment problem in the drive shaft(s) in reverse.
