Noise from rear wheel

hi. just recently i hae been experiencing a rubbing/grinding noise from the rear right wheel, also it has made a clonking noise like a flat tyre but it isnt, i can hear the noise from about 25/30 mph when i go faster or slower i cant hear the noise.

Jack that wheel off the ground and see if there is slop in the wheel bearing…Try to move the wheel back and forth, push-pull without turning it. If you can feel slop or looseness, the wheel bearing is bad. Now give the tire a spin. it should spin smoothly and quietly without any rumble…

I would tend to think that the noise was most likely caused by a tire with a tread that is beginning to separate, or one that has worn in a cupped fashion. It is also very hard to determine which corner of a car is making the noise. Noise travels through the body very well.

Have you noticed any degradation in handling? Once a rear wheel bearing on a BMW goes really bad, the rear end will try to steer the car. When a bearing is really bad, it can get very scary. I’ve done several of them. The repair requires removal of the trailing arm and pressing in a new bearing. How many miles are on your BMW? What year, and what series.?
