My car (2010 Subaru Impreza manual transmission) is making a weird clicking sound when beginning to move in reverse. It doesn’t do it in any other gear. If I give it more gas when I begin to go and don’t let the clutch rub, it doesn’t do it. It only happens when I let the clutch work when starting to move in reverse. It will only happen for a couple seconds and won’t continue even when traveling in reverse. It’s not clutch chatter as I’ve had that in the past and it’s not shaking the car. It just creates this loud noise. I was driving in heavy rain with big puddles right before it happened. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
My guess would be clutch chatter, when you reverse you tend to be a little slower when taking off in 1st…
Try taking off in 1 exactly like you normally do in reverse and see if it does it…
From your description, IF I understand you correctly, you are not giving it much gas and letting out on the clutch a little faster (don’t let the clutch rub?) in reverse and that is when it makes noise (chatter)…
You could have a broken torsion spring(s) in the clutch disc causing the noise when it chatters…
If I am not careful, I will chatter my clutch backing out of my steep driveway, but never had an issue if pulling out of it forward…
It doesn’t do it in any other gear no matter how much I give it gas vs clutch. I’ve had clutch chatter and it doesn’t feel like that. It doesn’t shake the car. Just this loud popping sound
Reverse is probably geared lower than any of the forward gears, maybe part of the explanation why you only hear the clicks in reverse. As you only hear this when clutch is purposely slipping a little, seems pretty likely whatever the cause, it is inside the transmission bell-housing. Meaning the transmission is probably going to have to be removed at some point to figure it out. How many miles on this clutch?
