Is the blower etc. 2-stroke? I worry more about those no matter what because of the diaphragm carbs. But I probably don’t need to worry so much with the ethanol free, quality mix oil, and stabilizer. By the same respect I’ve gone to often using the synthetic fuels for those just because I often don’t even burn up a whole tank in a session.
The synth fuels are VERY expensive, comparatively speaking. But I don’t go through much of it, so figure it’s worth avoiding carb problems. So far, I’ve had no issues with it, including when I don’t run things dry. Wondering if anyone has any insights about that.
Back in the late 1980s, when I was stationed in South Korea, I was flying home and I had a plane change in Tokyo… I wanted a soda and a small kiosk in the airport was selling Coca Cola and I saw the price and it was not in dollars… My brain was still in Korea where the currency was about 750 Won to the dollar and the price was 1,000… I asked if they took US dollars and they said yes and I ordered the soda. I gave the attendant a $10.00 bill and he handed me back a few coins in the value of about 250. I asked him where my change was and he pointed at my hand…
I said the coke costs only 1,000 won and that’s only about $1.25 and he laughed (he was probably thinking “Stupid Rabbit…”), and he said, “You are not in Korea anymore, that price is 1,000 Yen and the exchange rate is 120 Yen to the Dollar, not 750 Won to the Dollar…”
Well, that woke me up and made me realize “I wasn’t in Kansas anymore” and that Coke Cola cost about $8.00…
No the blower is a four cycle Briggs, same as the generator and pressure washer. The mower does have a diaphram for the fuel pump but never had a problem with the non oxy fuel. I also use synthetic oil in everything.
My 4 cycle single stage snowblower does not like to start if I run it out of fuel. 2 stage no problem, lawnmower no problem but switched to electric lawnmower. Have to go 30 miles to get non oxy 91 octane, did that 2 years ago, must have been bad gas but neither would start. 87 and seafome standard for now.
Getting back to gas pumps, some stations have a television screen in the pump that plays commercisls when I pump the gas.
I want a television for my house with a gasoline hose so I won’t need to go to the gas station.
Seriously, I find these pumps at the gas stations with the built in TV screens annoying. I’ll take the old Tokiem brand gas pumps where you turned a crank to reset the display and observed the little
spinning propellor that indicated that gasoline was being pumped. Also, there was a separate pump for each grade of gasoline.
We don’t have those in my area, but–for a few years–the dominant supermarket chain had TVs blaring advertisements at customers as they stood in line waiting to be checked out. One day, after a particularly annoying commercial barrage, my comment to the cashier was… I’m really glad that you guys installed those TVs because my doctor recently told me that I wasn’t watching enough TV.
She gave me a very quizzical/bemused look, so I think that she perceived my sarcasm. The bottom line is that there were probably a lot of complaints, because those TVs were removed after less than 1 year, and they never reappeared.
I think it is the Shell stations in my area with the TV’s, I too hate them, I enjoy hearing my music but I turn it down while getting gas, as most people don’t enjoy my music selection, so now in order for me to hear my music I have to turn it up so I can hear it over very loud TV crap… Don’t remember if other station that I use has them or not…
We have the tv screens at the gas pump here playing adverts too, but they seem to have turned down the sound volume, so easy to ignore. I guess anytime you are forced to be in a place you can’t avoid, pretty good chance you’ll get exposed to some adverts these days. This effect is very easy to see in the entrance area to most any retail or grocery store, nearly impossible to maneuver through the displays. I’ve always thought this a fire hazard, presents an obstruction to those inside the store from quickly exiting in event of a fire, but apparently it’s considered safe, by those in the know.
Only a couple stations where I live do. They are newer Shell stations. And they are EXTREMELY LOUD. I guess they want to make sure you can hear it for the people who forgot their hearing aids that day.
I was filling up the other day and noticed there was an arrow pointing to the second button down on the right with the word “Mute”. Pressed the button and voila, no more listening to the annoyingly loud advertising. I’m not sure if that works on all pumps but it’s worth a shot.
That would be glorious. I’ve always looked for one and haven’t yet came across a panel that lets you do that. I did once tell a station manager that those things make me far less likely to use their station. Just plain annoying (as others have noted).
Well as leap year rolls along just be happy you can still buy gas, not like New Zealand. Pumps evidently shut down due to a leap year computer glitch. I remember the concern when 2000 rolled in. Forgot about leap year.
I remember the Y2K thing and how a lot of people including family members and friends were freaking out about how everything was going to shut down bla bla bla…
I didn’t change anything that I was doing… lol
I figured if something as simple as a VCR was already capable of working into the next century that the banks and others had already prepared for it as well… and I was right…
Are the gas pumps only 3 years old or less?? Gezzz, it’s not like leap year doesn’t happen, ohh lets say, every 4 years…
One more reason for me to continue buying my gas at Costco, where they don’t have any of those pump-mounted TVs! And, before someone chimes in with “the lines are too long”, I go there in the middle of the week, in the middle of the day, when the lines at the pump are non-existent.
I was initially concerned, but–like you–I figured that companies that had a lot to lose would likely be proactive in preventing y2k problems. I guess that I was taking a chance, but I booked a trip to The Netherlands, and I was in the air–more or less in the middle of the Atlantic–when the clock rolled-over to the new year, and nothing negative took place… luckily.
My wife and I spent NY Eve on a gambling boat, I hoped when midnight came the slot machines would go nuts and payout jackpots, nope did not happen😀
When the boat returned to the port we saw the lights were on, end of the world avoided.
Need to wash the windows now and then, not at Costco. Sure I buy gas there. A lot of people must be watching prices, 2.09 to 2.34 local gas in 2 days, line for gas backed up past Costco entrance. Hear the economy is good, but all these people lined up to save 20 cents a gallon, so confused ,and chicofil long line, buy a chicofil with the money you save on gas?
