Locking gearshift in a 2001 Nissan Sentra

When downshifting from 5th gear (overdrive) the gearshift seems to lock and it is difficult getting back into 1st and 2nd gear. Anyone else with a Nissan experience this problem and did you find out the cause and did you get it fixed? My mechanic couldn’t find the cause of the problem.

The problem might be just that the gearshift assembly is worn and loose.

But if the clutch feels softer than it used to, or you need to depress it farther than you needed to before, then you might need to add fluid if you have a hydraulic clutch. I’m pretty sure you do, but if not there will be a means to adjust a cable.

If there is no slipping or burning smell after you shift gears, then you probably don’t need a new clutch. But if neither is the problem, then you probably need a new throw out bearing, and if so you would want to replace the clutch along wih it anyway.
I hope this helps. If not, please let me know.
