Drove the daughters car on mothers day, grocery store trip. Filled it up with gas (loving dad). Noticed it makes a slight whirring noise when slowing down. Never got over 30 mph. She had trans serviced 3 months ago, but as our drive is an incline did not check fluid level. She says it has been doing this forever. I did not look at the mileage but thinking 165k or so. My first thought trans or torque converter, your thoughts?
With or without the brakes being applied?? Yes I know you used them to slow down but did you let off to see if the noise went away or while coasting??
The only times I’ve heard loud whirring noises was due to brake problems.
hmmm… Anything else?

My gf’s newer CVT equipped Corolla makes faint whirring noises on acceleration, but I expect that’s normal. She complains it sounds too much like a race car.

Oh, my prior 4-speed manual trans VW Rabbit would make whirring noises, but only when in 1st gear. . Speeding up or slowing down, either way. Just normal gear noise. My 30 year old Corolla makes a similar noise, but only in reverse. I’m guessing that’s what you are hearing, normal gear noise.

Another idea, when my truck’s water pump is soon to fail, it announces its pending fate by making a whirring noise.
Without brakes being applied. Goes for a little bit then goes away, Happens while letteing off the gas but not applying brakes (breaks!)
Are you able to get it to whir when parked, engine running? Try bumping the rpm too. When you are slowing down, foot off the gas, no brakes, does the sound change if you shift into N and coast?
Right now I can’t think of anything without being able to drive the vehicle and or hearing the noise…
No. have not tried the shift to neutral.
Barkydog, do you think it is loud enough to get a recording of the noise?? If so maybe have you or your daughter record it and then post it…
I was riding my bicycle yesterday, heard a car coming by making a distinctive and fairly loud whirring sound. It was the engine compartment fan. Something to consider at least.
