Interference or Not?

So, is the 3.2 Ltr engine from Mopar an interference engine or not? I’ve heard from both camps, one saying that if the timing belt lets loose while the engine is running, it’s toast, and the other folks saying “It just won’t run anymore, but can be easily fixed.” So, what’s the scoop from engineering?

According to the Allpar page the 2.7, 3.2, and 3.5 engines all use a timing chain.

May be a timing chain…but it still could be a Interference engine.

SECOND OPINION HERE

Mr. Main Squeeze doesn’t give make, year, model, etc.

However, I am putting the second timing belt on my 97 Dodge Intrepid 3.5 !
I know my wife’s 99 Intrepid 2.7 has a chain.
I have factory service manuals for them both.

The 99’s manual has a “CAUTION: The 3.2/3.5L are not freewheeling engines, therefore care should be taken not to rotate the camshafts or crankshaft with the timing belt removed.”

Guess what rotates when mother nature removes your timing belt?

Also, WARNING! According to the Gates Timing belts site, the 3.2 I looked up has a belt and it is an INTERFERENCE engine.

Gates supplies a lot of automtive belts to the automobile world.
Check out page on the link below. Find the part about interference engines and put your particular info in.
