I have a little over 72,000 miles on my 2019 Ford Fusion, It has been hesitating when I accelerate. Took it to the Ford dealer last week. They tell me that I need to have the transmission rebuilt. I am not questioning that. But I do have two questions:
Shouldn’t a transmission last longer than this? We are OLD and don’t drive hard. That is 72,000 miles in a little over 6 years with only about the first year of commuter traffic before I retired.
Quoted a price of just under $5900 for suburban Atlanta (Kennesaw Ford dealer). Sounds like a lot, but is it? Don’t mind paying what I need to to get the job done, but is that fair?
Oh, guess I have a third question. Are the independent shops like AAMCO any good? They have been around for a long time, so it seems like they must have something going for them.
CVT’s have been problems for most vehicle manufacturers. Especially if the transmission fluid isn’t serviced on a regular basis,
Since the vehicle is out of warranty, I would get estimates from independent repair shops on replacing the transmission with a rebuilt. They might be able to replace the transmission for less.
Most transmission rebuilders know the trouble spots of these transmissions And if there are any improvements to make the transmissions last longer, they include it in the rebuild. Where if you have the dealer install one, you’ll end up with the same defective part that came in the vehicle in the first place.
I have the 2.5 Liter 4 speed so I think that means the 5 speed.
I was able to call my long-time mechanic this morning (I bought the Ford new so was taking it to the dealer under warranty) and they recommended a local shop. Talked to him and he said he has never charged over $4900 for any transmission rebuild.
You are right. It is a 2.5 4 CYLINDER with a 6 speed transmission automatic. I’m not confused. I just can’t think and type at the same time! Thanks for pointing that out to me. I need all the help I can get.
