Hyundai gas filter problem

My wife’s 2001 Hyundai Sonata has a clogged gas filter (I am told) that makes filling the tank difficult…the gas hose keeps shutting off. Can this charcoal filter be cleaned, or does it need to be replaced…est. cost $500. Thank you

It can’t be cleaned. The charcoal canister often becomes contaminated as a result of “topping off” the gas tank. Always stop filling when the nozzle clicks off the first time.

I don’t know how Hyundai sets their system up exactly but odds are the canister itself is not the problem. This should be diagnosed further before throwing a 500 dollar (ouch) part at it.

Drop by a local parts house and have the car scanned for codes first. AutoZone, Checkers, whomever, will do this for you free and it only takes a few minutes.
Once codes, if any, are obtained, you can go from there.
