Point the water at the base of the flame. Way I was taught anyway.
Glad you missed it. IMO if your car had still been there, any vehicle in the two spots between you and the fire would have blocked heat damage to your car. If you were still there, the worst that would have happened is that your departure would have been delayed, and that’s a big plus.
