Yeah, it sure appears that it will not connect unless through USB cable. Appears you can use bluetooth audio etc but not Andriod Auto or Carplay.
If the USB cable is disconnected,
operation of Apple CarPlay/Android Auto will end. At this
time, sound output will stop and
change to the system screen.
You’d think they would make everything work the same across their product line… I heard truck guys don’t like things to be too easy
