I have a 2000 Civic DX Hatch manual transmission, with ~145K miles on it. Transmission has been getting louder and louder over last two years to the put where it needs to be fixed. I’m not sure if I should get it rebuilt or put a used one in there. I’m worried that with a used tranny I have no idea what I’m getting, but I also have no reference for a shop to rebuild, I’d just be walking in off the street. Also, I’m confused about shops offering warranties on used trannys - I’d still have to pay to install a replacement if it fails, no? Also - how many miles is too many on a used one?
I’ve been quoted $1400 to rebuild with new clutch, and $1250 cash for a used tranny + new clutch, ~100K miles on the used, 1 year warranty on the whole job. Anyone have any advice? I’m really stuck …
