GM reported very strong Q1 earnings

Mary Barra today reported strong Q1 earnings for GM and increased earnings guidance for the full 2023 year to $11 billion to $13 billion. She also announced that GM is now #2 in US market sales of EVs. I foresee a very bright future ahead for the General and for Ms. Barra.

While Tesla’s market share has shrunken, EVs continue to sell in significant numbers. Obviously GM, Ford, and others are taking some of that market share from Tesla.

On a related note, a couple of days ago, I saw my first Rivian R1S SUV, and it was a pretty impressive-looking vehicle (except–IMO–for the ovoid headlights).

The same day, I saw my third Lucid Air sedan. They are really sleek-looking, IMHO.

Not only do some Americans have the money for very pricey new vehicles, but they also seem to be interested in EVs.

I saw my Rivian pickup truck on the highway last Saturday. Driving faster than I wanted to (yes, it was moving pretty fast!), so I did not get a good look.

So far, I’ve seen 3 of their pickups, and I had been wondering how long it would be before I saw my first Rivian SUV. For those who have told us in this forum that “nobody can afford to buy expensive EVs”, I should point out that the Rivian SUV’s price starts at $80k, and the Lucid Air Sedan starts at $87k.

I saw it between Naples and Bonita Springs… no shortage of money there!

It had a private plate on it, not a manufacturer’s plate so it was a “sold” vehicle. The driver was running about 85 mph… My truck is not comfortable at that speed so I couldn’t get a good look. What I saw looked pretty good.

I saw my fist Lucid Air a couple of weeks ago in the Home Depot parking lot. Two tone: burgundy lower and silver roof. It looked sharp. I have only seen one Rivian pickup. It was at the Electrify America on the local Walmart parking lot. I talked to the owner for a moment. He saw me fiddling with the CCS adapter for my Tesla and told me it wouldn’t work. His wife had the same problem with the adapter they give you with the car. I figured it out. There’s a tab on the bottom of the adapter that has to be ground off for the adapter to fit onto the CCS cable. It doesn’t really matter though. You can’t charge faster than 19.7 kW/hr and that’s too slow for me. You need a high power DC adapter to charge at a reasonable 50 kW/hr or more.

Here in Southern CA there are plenty of Rivian Trucks and Lucid air sedans. One of the Rivians shares my daily commute, I think I have been seeing it for close to a yr. Don’t like the headlights but can’t afford the car anyway. The Lucid air seems like a comfy sedan, but for that kind of money you can get a lot of cars.
