I spilled gas in the cargo area of my station wagon. What can I do to get rid of the odor?
Take all the loose rugs out and air them. Mop up any liquid gas with a sponge or rag.Park the car with windows open for a few days. Gasoline is very volatile and the rest will disappear soon.
Remove any carpet or padding the gas soaked into and clean it outside the vehicle. You can use carpet cleaner, Simple Green, etc, and a garden hose. Let everything dry thoroughly and air out a few days before you put it back in the car.
Clean the interior metal surfaces with a degreaser. Leave the windows down a bit when the weather’s nice.
Eventually the gas will evaporate and the smell will go away. Cleaning the carpet and padding speeds the process.
thanks.
