I HAVE A 1972 FIAT 500 ABARTH WITGH ONLY 8000 KMS.IT IS IMMACULATE AND I ONLY DRIVE ONCE A MONTH AND LOVE IT.
THE GAS TANK HAS THE WIDE FILLER NECK USED IN THE OLDER LEADED FUEL DAYS. MY PROBLEM IS THAT WHEN I TRY TO FILL THE TANK THE PUMP SHUTS OFF AFTER 1-2 GALLONS (THE TANK HOLD 4 1/2 GALS = 18 LTRS_ MY QUESTION IS CAN I BUY AN ADAPTOR FOR THE FILLER NECK OR DO I HAVE TO CONTINUE DECANTERING FROM A JERRY CAN?
Why would a wide filler neck cause problems? Its easier for the fuel to flow down a wide neck.We never saw the filling concerns that we are seeing today on the older cars.Maybe you can explain.
It might be the pump you are using. Can you try a different source? I don’t think it is the neck size.
Are you in an area where the fuel nozzle has an accordion rubber sleeve on it to collect fuel vapors? If so, and the car has an open vent on the gas tank, the gas pump may not be seeing the back pressure it expects from vapors coming out of the tank. Try a different gas station.
