FWD tranny compatibility

While driving in town at 30 mph my car locked up as if I had jammed on the brakes. I shifted to N and then back to L and proceeded on to a garage who told me the tranny was hosed. He said I’ll have low, second and reverse until it finally gives out. 2nd Part: Looking for a salvage tranny I looked up make and model and found the A604(41TE)is what mine has. A cross index showed MANY Dodge and Chrysler cars used that model trans. Is there any problem with getting, say a 1996 Dodge Laser, which I found for $300 with 30-day warranty? Obviously I would hate to make a long drive to get it, pay for it installed ($400) and it not work. Retired, small Soc Sec check and am trying to be careful here. Thanks! Mike in Ky.
