Fuel odor problem!?

I have a 1996 Chevy Blazer, 4.3l Vortec, 4 door, 4x4. I have noticed recently that when I fill the gas tank, I get a strong odor of fuel, but cannot physiacally see a leak. After about a 1/4 burns off, the odor disappears. I now only fill to 1/2 or to a 1/4 tank to avoid the smell. Any ideas?? Thanks

Do you mean the odor remains until the tank is about ? empty? Where do you smell it? How strong is it?

I am suspicious that you may have a leak in the tank.  That usually means dropping the tank.

Yeah, the fuel smell, which is STRONG, lasts until about a 1/4 has burned off from full. I see no leaks anywhere on the garage floor. Any ideas? Is dropping the tank a real pain?? Thanks

if your fuel pump is in the tank check the seal around it .
