2003 Hyundai 350XG has front end shimmy. Already did alignment and balance. Does this violent shaking between 55-65mph; tremors at lower speeds. When slightly turning on a curve, the shimmy decreases or stops, but when going straight the tremor or shaking returns.
Dealer service doesn’t think its the breaks or rotors…
Any suggestions? don’t want to spend a fortune on multiple diagnostics…
know you mentioned you had your tires balanced, have you had them looked at for the radial belt in the tire for breakage/defect? my 92 ford ranger pick up truck was doing the same thing you mentioned and it turned out to be a broken belt in the tire, bought new tire and everything was fine.
Have the tires been rotated? If so does this change the characteristics of the shimmy.
Do’in The Shimmy
They must have carefully checked tie-rods and ball joints, since they did an alignment, right?
I would suspect a bad tire or wheel rim. A worn out strut or shock absorber or a missing wheel-balance weight can cause problems, too. Tires can have lots of tread left or be practically new, but develop a defect. By having a technician slowly spin them on a wheel balancer, he/she should be able to spot trouble and correct the balance. At that same time a bent rim or bad tire can be spotted. Tremors at really low (parking lot) speeds point to a tire or rim to be the culprit. You will only slightly feel the car (front or rear) wiggle back and forth. Get a balance and ask specifically for the tires and rims to be checked for being straight and round. Have them show you what they find, if you’re interested.
