Ford V10 dies when put in gear

I have a 2000 Ford F-250 with the 6.8 V10 in it. 104,000 miles.

Occasionally when I put it in reverse or drive, the rpms drop really low to about 500 and truck stalls. It’s only intermittent, does not do it every single time. When it happens it throws a code for bank 2 too lean, I can clear the code and it comes back when it happens again. Any thoughts?

The Idle Air Control valve may be faulty

The IAC valve controls the engines idle speed under all conditions.

Me thinks Testor has the solution.

BTW, clearing a code does not cure the problem. Think of it this way, at a hospital, disconnecting the EKG does not cure a heart attack.

Yes, I’m aware that clearing the code does not fix it. I more so meant it as the code is linked to the problem because every time it happens it throws that code.

Thank you for the response. I will look into the IAC valve. I was thinking it might have been the MAF sensor

They’re easy enough to clean, and no reason not to do it. As for the IACV, I’d start by cleaning it to see if that makes any difference.

Keep a regular screw driver with you, next time it does idle real low, grab the blade and tap (with handle) on the IAC to see if it affects it or not, same with the MAF… remember, you are trying to wake them up, not knock them out… lol
It might work, it might not…

If the the lean-code is limited to bank 2, less likely to be the idle air control valve or the MAF sensor that’s causing it. Those parts are common to both banks. Your shop might be able to use a propane wand to narrow down the cause. If the engine rev’s in a certain wand location, that indicates a nearby air leak.

I don’t think that code is what’s causing the engine to stall, it’s being thrown BECAUSE the engine stalled.
