Hi. My mechanic in Brooklyn, NY just informed me I need a new exhaust system. He says he can save the catalytic converter but needs to replace everything after it due to excessive rust. Any ideas on how much this should cost. He quoted me $531 for parts and $195 for labor. Thanks!
That sounds a little high to me. The parts are fairly expensive for this particular car, but not THAT high.

the down pipes are Stainless I believe, so should never rust. but everything after the CAT is plain old steel. I’m not surprized at the price you quote for parts.

Stainless steel CAN rust. It all depends on the GRADE of stainless steel. The OEM exhaust on my 98 pathfinder is stainless…After 200k miles it rusted out.
