Exhaust Pipe Damper Mounting Help

2005 Toyota Camry LE, 4 Cylinder 2AZ-FE Engine, U250 E A/T
TLDR: Mounting of exhaust pipe damper, 17581A, does it not get mounted to anything other than the exhaust pipe?

Looking at the official service manual, this car is supposed to have an exhaust pipe damper in this area. However the manual transmission doesn’t need one, seems strange.

However my car doesn’t seem to have this part on it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the bolts rusted off and it came off, as another bracket seems to have done that on my vehicle.

I’m having difficulty locating how the Exhaust Pipe Damper for my exhaust is mounted or located. My car is apparently supposed to have one. Looking at this section of pipe on my exhaust, I did find this weird looking thing, that might be the bracket I’m looking for that is completely gone on my car.

My car is excessively loud, but I’m not sure if that is because of the other missing bracket or leaks.

Looking at the Toyota parts catalog to get a better understanding of the part I believe to be missing from my car,

Seems to be part number 17581A

Looking online under this part number to get a better picture,

It seems to have two bolts on one side that mount directly to the exhaust pipe. But I’m not sure how the other side of it is mounted to the vehicle. Can’t seem to find any information on this. Is this part just completely flat and doesn’t mount to anything on the other side, just rests up against the car?

That pipe is rusted out.

That pipe needs to be replaced, and who knows what else?

Hey Thanks,

Yea I’m trying to figure out which replacement part I need. I need one with a bracket on the side to hold this damper? They sell them for this car with and without the damper. It seems that the damper is just flat on the side and just rests against the bottom of the car and isn’t actually mounted to anything on the other side?

There is a reason why muffler shops exist .

That’s a harmonics damper.

It attaches to the exhaust pipe and nothing else.

It’s weight attached to the exhaust to eliminate unwanted noises from the exhaust under certain conditions.

Here’s an example of exhaust harmonic dampers.

.

You don’t absolutely need to replace the harmonic damper, but you might hear unwanted exhaust noises under certain engine operating conditions.
