Driver dies when car hits a tree near Downtown - Darn trees!
Yeah trees are tough. A few years ago a dui missed the curve a couple blocks away and hit a tree. You can still see the imprint. The passenger was severely injured or maybe died, just don’t remember. The driver was sent to jail. Don’t know if he’s out yet.
Didn’t read the article.
In drivers education in the 60s we were told if in a situation where you were going to hit a tree or a cow, choose the cow, they are softer.
Driver hits tree at 3 am. Sounds like DUI to me.
What is the point of this?? Yes, big, old trees win most every time…
Most???
Still doesn’t answer why they went into the tree but KRQE has a little more details in their story.
APD says around 3 a.m. officers responded to a fatal crash at the intersection of Central and Elm. Police says initial investigation showed a black Mitsubishi was traveling east on Central and drove across westbound lanes and struck a tree. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead on scene and was the only person in the vehicle.
Well you know, if I said every time, then someone in the group would say that is a blanket statement and bla bla bla…
I hit a small Oak tree years ago doing about 10-20 mph beside a long driveway and the tree won, torn the front steel bumper Up…

Whenever there is a one-vehicle crash, the cause is likely to be DUI, or a medical emergency, or falling asleep at the wheel. It seems like most of these accidents take place late at night, but once in a while they do happen during the day.
In Florida, hitting trees, houses, grocery store is a daily occurrence, any time of day.
Hope the driver is able to recover fully from his injuries. Could be distracted or drowsy driving, which puts everyone at risk. Wishing him the best as he receive treatment.
Driver loses control, hits tree, is seriously injured. No news here.
Is it a slow news day? I assume a pager with a concealed explosive didn’t explode and cause the driver to lose control. That would a big news story.
It could be:
- The vehicle hit the tree at a speed higher than 45 MPH.
- It happend at a lower speed, but the driver was overweight or had a health condition.
- It happened at a lower speed, but the seatbelt was not used. This accounts for about 40% of fatalities.
- It happened at a lower speed, but it was a small overlap or oblique crash.
- It was an old vehicle with poor crash structure.
If there is ever a picture, we can see.
My cousin died at the age of 19 when he collided with a tree.
This was in 2019.
Also, another cousin on the island was hit by a fallen tree when he was driving a mini public bus and the tree chopped the bus in half killing a passenger in the middle of the bus.
10yrs ago a co-worker and son of a longtime co-worker died when he fell asleep at the wheel in the early hours of New Years 2014 and drove into a large tree at 40+mph. Almost 22yrs old.
And I thought this thread was about Ernie Kovacs, who wrapped his wife’s stationwagon around a light pole when he tried to negotiate a left turn too quickly.
