Forward looking InfraRed (FLIR) is amazing. When I was training as a Aerial Sensor Specialist/Navigator At United States Army Intelligence Center and School (USAICS) Ft Huachuca, AZ in 1978 our Grumman OV-1D Mohawk airplanes had downward looking InfraRed. You could see things where you had just been. One day a blue and white OV-1C was parked on the ramp. It was a US Customs aircraft equipped with FLIR. They could follow a suspected lights out drug smuggling aircraft up to a mile away from their exhaust heat with the OV-1s lights out, determine which landing strip they were headed for and have a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) welcoming party transported in motor vehicles (car related) waiting for them. Amazing technology in 1978.
