I hate to think about it, but I think the good part (relatively speaking, of course) of this is that it will cause us to be more prepared (I would hope) for the next one, which could be a whole lot worse.

Don’t hold your breath. There was an executive office to handle epidemics and pandemics in the 1990s. When President Bush took office, it was disbanded. When the Ebola epidemic and SARS rampaged, the Bush administration reopened the office. After President Obama was elected, the office was closed again and was once again reopened in response to the H1N1 pandemic. When President Trump was elected, what happened? The office was yet again closed. I hope you’re right, but don’t bet on it.
I’m trying to shut up but what do you mean we weren’t prepared for this? It happens about every ten years. But yeah the CDC was not prepared by spending their time worrying about gun violence, spending down 3/4 of the stockpile from the last event and not replenishing it. Hospitals that implemented JIT inventory and trimmed their stocks from 3 months to a week, and the corporations that saw dollar signs and globalization and sent critical supply and equipment production off shore? Not to mention the governor that was supposed to order 16,000 ventilators but decided to spend it on solar power instead. Then the whole slow moving FDA and no modernization of vaccine production. Then lets look at the China and WHO connection and what they did during Ebola. Doctors without Borders took the brunt. Time for some major changes. Were they all little kids during H1N1 and didn’t learn from that? And some folks have been sounding the alarm about air travel and imported foods for years as incubators. Then the faulty Chinese thermometers allowing folks with fevers to pass right through. My gosh. You think we were just born? This was totally expected. But we have never taken this decisive action before except during the 1918 pandemic. Sorry. I need a cup of coffee, but wake up folks. You think it’s politics? No its incompetence and a growing bureaucracy. Wanna talk mosquitoes?
No it was re-organized but that didn’t stop the bungling.
I don’t dispute that some businesses and individuals are having a hard time right now with the shut down. But since 2007 we have been telling people they need to prepare for bad times with 6 months or more cash, trim expenses, reduce debt and so on. Same for businesses. They need to be prepared for a week, month, or maybe several months of disruption. It’s just good business. What good business does not have a disaster plan? As we have discovered who our friends are, we need to be more prepared for these people to try and disrupt our lives. Then think whether this was actually a fluke of nature or a leak from bio-warfare research? I don’t know and neither does anyone else but something to think about.
Hi all. Can we please try to get back on topic? Thanks.
Now I remember. I’ve got a 2007 Factory Acura manual somewhere. I was going to take a look for any mention of blue tooth.
Yep, the 07 had it. Whatta ya know?.
I am trying not to point fingers to anybody or any group, but either way, there are a lot of gaps in the infrastructure. We just put out fires when they happen.
I am going to try and bring it back to cars. Ford is trying to assemble ventilators.
One of my first mentors, had a stock of old ventilators that were easy to work on and I have practiced assembly and disassembly on them. They are not that complicated.
Germany is doing much better because they have a lot of reserve in their system, so they can use it when needed.
Maybe when the numbers in your area gets up there it’ll change. In MA and NY they are asking retired Doctors and Nurses to come back because the current staff is overwhelmed. Doesn’t matter if you weren’t an ER nurse or an ER doctor.
New unemployment filings this week topped 6 million. Several people in my neighborhood have been effected.
Many well respected economists predict this will be short lived once the Virus has passed. But the problem is waiting for the Virus to pass. Not expected to peak til May…maybe June in some area’s of the country.
In NY, I read about a Plastic Surgeon–who currently has no scheduled surgery because all elective surgery has been cancelled–and is now serving as an ER doctor.
In which country is that? Does the constitution in that country allow such a thing? (I can’t imagine it.)
Just asking for a friend…

The sheriff isn’t stated it as law. Just guidelines which people should follow. As opposed to the Philippines - The president said that people caught outside during quarantine will be shot.
That’s your interpretation. I didn’t see anything there that said what would happen if people didn’t comply.
I think the Sheriffs post was clever . It might just reach some of those who think they are invincible . As for angry , why not they and their fellow law officers can’t set at home until this is over ( if ever ) .
Did you catch the “WHAT will it take for you to understand?!”
Guidelines?
Exactly! It’s left kind of open-ended. Remember, there are some real Barney Fifes with tazers, guns, and hand cuffs out there.
Feeling lucky? Well, do ya?
Break a few of those “guidelines” while that sheriff watches you and see if he turns a cheek.

It is Ocean County, NJ, and the Sheriff–along with all of the other elected officials in that county–ran on the GOP ticket. You can interpret that reality as you wish.
Folks do that here, too. They want to be elected, so they run on the GOP side, the winning ticket.
We also have guys who run on whichever ticket is unopposed, be it elephant , jackass (picture NA subbed) (Can I still say that? It is an animal, right?), or otherwise.

Yea…and how is that NOT guidelines. The governor announced social distancing and I’m guessing that the sheriff is probably seeing a lot of people NOT doing what was asked. Some people just don’t understand or don’t care - Spring Break comes to mind.
No better what you say or do you can’t get rid of the Barney Fifes. They’re always going to be there…only the real ones don’t have that one bullet they keep in their shirt pocket. Their guns are fully loaded.
In many parts of the country it really depends on what the color of your skin is.
It’s actually not a new phenomenon in that county, which has been “red” for as long as anyone can remember.
Ocean County has a very large population of senior citizens living in gated communities, an economy which is largely dependent on seasonal tourism, and the state’s worst Opiate/Opioid addiction problem.
It’s NJ’s equivalent of Florida, minus the reptiles!
What? No gators? Are you sure?
They had one in Chicago not long ago.
They had to import a Florida Cracker Gator Wrestler to round it up in short order.
He became instantly famous and got to throw out a first pitch in Cubs-Red game. Notice in the article it’s a “Florida Man.”
