Create more leg space in sedan with two car seats in back?

2014 Acura TSX,
Tall person with two car seats in the back of this car. Knees up against dash as driver. Looking to create some more leg room. Any suggestions?

This is a “luxury” vehicle with thick padded bucket seats. I measure about 5 inches thick. Are there “specialty” bucket seats that have a thin back that I could put in to make more space? Meaning this dimensions

Thanks for any ideas. Hoping to not have to buy a larger vehicle.

Yes!

They’re called racing seats.

Some replacement seats are thinner but not racing buckets. See below.

If your factory seats have side airbags, these replacements will not. You will need to fool the airbag control module with resistors to turn the SRS light off.

I am guessing you did not consider any of this, not to mention the $1000 to $3000 these seats will cost.

My suggestion is to buy a bigger car.

Hi thank you. I’m not familiar with racing seats. Why would a bigger car be a better option? I think a thinner seat would ultimately be cheaper. But I’m not really familiar with thinner backed seats. So I don’t know and asking for other thoughts.

There are side airbags in the front seats, side curtain airbags and an occupant detection (weight) system in the right front seat. Modifications to the seats will disable these systems.

You should have bought a larger vehicle in the first place. That is hardly a "luxury vehicle ".

Car seats are one of the main reasons that CUV’s ( mid size SUV ) exist .

Thanks guys. Are racing seats even a thing that support a 3 point seatbelt even a thing? Every racing seat I find mentions 4 point or 6 point harnesses.

I don’t know for sure but you could be in Federal trouble because the side air bags will not be present and the precollision sytems will not work . You really will not gain much room in the rear of the vehicle . Also if involved in an accident your insurance carrier just might be able to deny coverage because of these modifications .

Sorry but this changing seats is just not a good idea.

Are you not at all concerned that those seats lack side airbags, and that this absence could possibly cause the front airbags to fail to function? I agree with those who said you need a larger/roomier vehicle.

If you really like the vehicle, you adapt.

Racing seats will have a fraction of the padding, prepare for major discomfort on a long drive. Go to a CarMax and try out a lot of cars, see what fits.

Those Corbeau road car seats recline like any normal seat and they are comfortable.and work with a 3 point belt. I put a pair in my old Mustang.

They are thinner but not by much. And they do not have the seat airbags. But neither did Recaros in the Shelby that year. Ford lists a resistor plug to fool the SRS.

Ummm, the picture you posted is of a Ferrari 360 Spider F1 right?? So why did you post a pic of a Ferrari when you have a 4 door Acura TSX??

You might be able to buy or have made custom seat track (extenders) that will let the seat move further back giving you more leg room…

Your 2014 Acura TSX is essentially a “fluffed up” Honda Accord. It should be spacious enough with the stock seats for four reasonably-sized adults to ride in comfort. I am 5’ 11" and have driven economy cars all my life, including subcompact models, and never found the seats uncomfortable. You must be well over 6’ if a Honda Accord type vehicle doesn’t offer sufficient legroom for the driver.

If the problem is that the childrens’ car seats take up too much space compared to an adult sitting in the rear seats, maybe it’s time to buy an SUV or minivan. Those type of vehicles are designed for larger families, families with small children, etc.

The tiny 2nd gen Neon had room for 2 child’s car seats, and the small 1992 Civic, way smaller than your TSX(?) was transporting 2 car seats and 3 here lately for years until it’s recent departure…

Are you talking about a rearward facing car seat??? If so, you only have to have the child facing rearward for 12 to 36 months depending on height and weight and then they get to face forward… If you and your family have out grown your TSX then maybe it is time to up grade to a bigger vehicle…Sometimes it is the adult thing to do…

Yes, but the TSX was a “fluffed-up” version of the Euro/Japan spec Accord, and those were shorter than the US-spec Accord.

Anyway, I think that the only solution that is both safe and practical is to trade-in the TSX on a larger/roomier vehicle.

Google extended seat tracks. You will see several sites. If no one has one for your car, you could have one fabricated. In the past, I have made my own but no longer have a place to do it.`

I don’t think extended seat tracks is the solution here . If I read the post correctly the child seats will not let the drivers seat move back far enough .

You might try out a new Accord, I read that they have lots of rear seat legroom, which should help your situation
