Cracking and popping sound in steering column

I bought a brand new 2007 Nissan Versa a month ago. I went to move it on Sunday, and when I turned the steering wheel in either direction, both in park and in motion, I got this horrible crackling sound, much like an aluminum can being crushed.

I brought it to a dealer yesterday, and they fixed it, but when I picked it up this morning they didn’t tell me what was causing it. All it said on my billing statement was: “Removed metal part causing the noise”.

I am curious as to what it was, and what it’s function is. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

That’s one thing I always hated about getting work done at the dealers … no dadburn feedback from the mechanic. Just, “Pay the cashier, and here’s your key.” Gee, thanks! You could attempt to get information from the service writer. He/she is only a step, or two, removed from the mechanic who did the work.

The best thing to do would be to back and get a detailed description of what they found. We aren’t going to be able to tell you what it was without seeing it.
