Minnesota did that a while back. Sold the idea as historical plates. Amazed at the number of people that like them and pay extra. Now I cant tell the Iowa cars on the road.
Meh, If gold on black, maybe.
I do pay extra for my specialty plates. Florida has hundreds of license plate options, including three standard designs (Sunshine State, In g o d We Trust, County Name) and over 180-200 specialty plates.
I would consider the In g o d plate if it had a choice of g o d pictures.
For some reason my son has always been a cubs fan. When they won the World Series he got a plate saying such. It didnāt go over very well in Ohio but like they say, if you canāt take a joke . . .
If U of Miami, it should be [ U Simple ]
(My good friend gradiated U of Miami.)
Indiana recently got the blacked out plates as a specialty option. I see quite a few of them amd they do look really sharp on certain cars.
Oh well, I consider Harvard a āsafety schoolā![]()
I wonder why āsafetyā isnāt blacked out? I guess Iām just old enough to remember but guess the kids donāt know.
TN offers a specialty black license plate, might look good against my blacked out red truck, but meh, I aināt paying extra for oneā¦
When I was about nine, my job was to change out the old plsres. Always in January. And th3 stove bolts were alwas rusted. Most of the plates were white but seems to my one was yellow. Not a fun job and before plastic bolts and never sieze. Then they went to metal tabs which were easier. Just one bolt. Finally the stick on tabs. The best adhesive was the 3m brand but to save money switched to cheaper adhesive. A few years ago I put the stickers on and went through the car wash. It blew the stickers off. I went back to the dmv office and h3 gave me new ones but said they couldnāt stand up to a car wash. Now I use the heat gun on the things.
Looked it up. 1950 was black. Before that gray and orange. So to be really hitorical they should have gone with orange plates but no one would buy them.
Would not be bad if just one initial charge. But they chargextra everyear even though it is the same plate from year to year.
For WA itās about $200+ for the black plates the 1st yr. Then an extra fee for renewal just like the other plates. If you really like the look. Still pennies compared to uk specialized plates.
I donāt know of any other meaning for the word safety for it to be blacked out.
I just checked, TN gas 210 different license plates available, with all kinds of different colorsā¦

NJ has āonlyā 17 specialized plates available. As with many other states, there is an additional annual fee, over and above the initial fee.
Support your favorite cause by ordering dedicated, i.e., special interest, license plates.

In addition, you can personalize your special interest plates with up to five characters for an initial $100 fee plus the annual renewal fee.
For the basic plates, the Annual fee: $26.50; $56.50 with personalization, we have 2 basic plates, one with In G.o.d We Trust and the other one without In G.o.d We Trust, I have the with on all our plates..
The other 208 specialty plates Annual fee: $61.50..
The standard/basic plate annual fee of $26.50 is included in the yearly tags renewal (somewhere)⦠County fees are dependent of that countyā¦

Dads personalized plates seems like I last paid around $125 yearly, IIRC
We do not use a personalized license plate not only because we are cheap, but also thathe plate number is more difficult to read or remember - in case someone perceives an affront by our driving.
You think black on pale green is more difficult to read?
I used to be able to spot plates from a quarter mile away. Wis was yellow, Iowa was black, col was green, sd had the faces on the plates, etc. now you canāt tell till you are right up on them. Iowa still has a tendency to drive in the left lane mile after mile
So thatās a clue.
