Colorado State Patrol brings back Mustangs to patrol fleet, troopers see benefits behind the buzz

155 mph top speed without a light bar should make speeders trying to evade capture pay attention. Further penalty would be to make them ride in the back seat of the Mustang back to jail!

My, how times have changed.
Back in the mid-late '60s, the NJSP exclusively used Chrysler New Yorker 6 window sedans for patrol purposes on the NJ Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. The '65 models had a 413 under the hood, and the '66 and later ones had a 440 under the hood.

On non-toll state highways, they used Ford Galaxie sedans.

As an “experiment”, they did a pilot program in the '70s, when they bought a few Volvo 164 (6 cylinder) sedans to replace a few of the Chryslers. That pilot program ended after a couple of years because they were unreliable and gutless. Whoever came up with that bizarre idea probably never heard the end of the ridicule that was heaped on him.

I remember when the Aspen Colorado police department decided to use Saab cars in the early 1970s, it made national news. It was in our east coast newspapers.

I recall it was “big news” because it was one of the first police departments to use a vehicle that wasn’t built in the US.

A city near to Dayton, Ohio…. A GM town…. bought a couple of Volvo police cars in the 80s. The police fleet mechanics hated them, the locals who worked for GM hated them and the police officers hated them. They quietly went away in about 2 years.

The Virginia State Troopers have some of the new Mustang GT patrol cars. They brought one of them out to the local Cars & Coffee a few months ago. Unfortunately the State Trooper that brought it out to the show thought that it would be cool if he left the blue lights going. This C&C goes for 3 hours and the Mustang’s battery wasn’t quite up to running the lights for that long with the engine off. He ended up having to get a jump start.
