On most cars and situations the light will go out by itself after X number of drives of at least Y number of miles. The same readers that can tell you what the code was can usually rest the light.
if you want immedate results you can disconnect your battery wires. then touch them together for ten seconds. that will turn off your check engine light.
NO NO NO NO. Just go to Autozone or a parts store near you, and ask if the read codes for free. If so, they can reset the codes with the scan tool with a single press of a button.
