Yes, the same kind Inspector Morse drove. His was only a 2.4 though, a policeman’s salary only goes so far.

I really wanted the retro styled S type from the mid 2000s, too bad Ford sold off Jaguar, seemed Ford did improve quality though though not enough for me to consider purchase a used one.
Saw a 1959 Mk IX at a car show, absolutely gorgeous.

Morse’s car was purchased by the Police and assigned to him as was common in the UK then and now. So not a salary issue, but of course the Police wouldn’t get the big engine since detectives don’t car-chase criminals!
