Car got hit

Hi, my mustang got hit in a parking lot while parked, and the guy who hit it admitted to fault to his insurance, with damages to my driver quarter panel, and part of driver door including the driver door handle. They estimated a cost of $1,650 to fix damages and also paint but my car color is 20 years old, and although ive got some clear coat issues on my hood and roof, the car paint was basically immaculate. They are sending me a check for their estimate, but i dont want a crappy paint blend, their driver hit me, I would want the car to still match, i can identify color blending very easy and it looks bad on cars. What are my choices, as i dont want a crappy job done. Was wishing they can repaint car to match completely, not just a spot. I can pay out of pocket the paint price for the roof or hood, just not the rest. I am an honest person who just wants this to come out right, im giving this car to my daughter as a gift afterall. My car has a metallic paint job, so I know those are hard to match…

There’s a law firm here that advertises “we never represent insurance companies!”

If you have clear coat issues, the paint isn’t really immaculate, is it?

If you want a repaint of the whole car, you need to work that out with their insurance company and the body shop. Don’t act like a jerk, be civil and explain your concerns about paint matching and discuss what they are willing to pay for, any break from the body shop and what you might contribute.

The only clear coat issues is roof and hood, the rest of car is like new that’s why. I’m never a jerk, just would want this resolved correctly as my car was the one that got hit through no fault of mine.

Cheap paint shops like Maaco that basically scuff and paint your car will probably not match the paint perfectly, but a dealer paint shop that is able to match the paint color will be able match the paint… Ask your ins company for who they recommend… And then when you talk to the paint shop, ask them about the clear coat issues…

If the body shop is any good they’ll use a paint matching scanner such as this,

Or, they gotta guy that can do this.

The insurance company is only responsible for repairing the area that was damaged by their policy holder.

Honestly I’ve had full paint jobs at maaco and it turned out nice, rather thry give me money to do body repair and whole car repaint and I take to maaco than have them pay more for a shop that doesn’t leave it like when it came out assembly line

Get a LAWYER!

This can not be said enough! Any other damage whether it is body or paint is entirely on you.

You need to give up on the idea that you’re going to get a windfall because you got hit. No reasonable person or business would expect it to look like it came off the assembly line after a limited repair on a 20 year old car. You have a right to be made whole and that is limited to fixing the damaged area back to the condition it was in prior to the damage. That means they will paint and blend to match the 20 year old paint. This is the money you will get if you want a check vs going to the body shop they choose. If you get a check, you can go anywhere you want and have them paint the whole car if you so choose but the difference will be on you.

That is an excellent summary of what the OP is entitled to.
No more, no less.

Okay, you got the $1650 to repair the areas damaged.
Now it is up to you to spend the other $3000 for a paint job, the money you would have had to spend to correct your other paint issues. Depending on the color of your car some of the metallics and pearls may not even be available.
Granted, you may be able to work a deal with Marco for less, I did that once. Never again.

After the original post and the responses by the OP, I have to wonder; What was the OP hoping to achieve by posting the original question? Did the OP expect that we could force the insurance company and body shop or would pay any attention to what we posted here? (Well, CarTalk says you need to paint my entire car!.. yeah, that will be ignored!) Or was the OP just wanting some validation of their opinion?

This is not the first post we’ve had like this. Won’t be the last. Anybody have any thoughts?

Hello @Mrpinga32_192215, wanna weigh in?

A good body-man will do it right. Check around. I recommend to stay away from any national chain like MAACO.

I get that, but why should I have to accept a patch job, no way is anyone going to paint and blend that damagedxare to my car. I’ll pay for thr hoodxand roof paint bit he rest of the car was prestine.

Because everyone else does. I’ve had body repairs that required respray of the repaired area. One rear quarter panel was damaged and to make it match the section of that body panel that extended over the doors had to be painted too. I couldn’t tell the difference between the resprayed areas and the remainder of the car.

Take it to reputable body shops and get estimates. You might ask your insurer what body shops they use in your area. They do this all the time and will know the best ones at an attractive price.

I resprayed a hood and half the door panel on my red 1984 Corvette myself. I brought the fuel filler door to the paint store and got a perfect match from their scanner. Once sprayed, you could not tell those areas from the rest of the car. And I’m an amateur, not a pro painter.

That makes me feel alittle better, not trying to scam the insurance or the shop, just want them to leave my car right you know?

Just flip you’re assumptions around for now. Find a reputable, local body shop. Assume that they WILL get it right and that you won’t be able tell that the car was damaged and repaired. (That is pretty much their job).

Have it repaired, and if you aren’t satisfied for some reason, discuss it with the body shop.
