Car alarm keeps going off in garage help please

Nah man I wasn’t picking on you, just picking up a point from the conversation. I know everyone was kidding, or at least I hope so.

I would really like to find out what’s going on though.

I am just shooting in the dark, but are you setting your alarm when you park your car in your garage? If you are; stop… See what happens… If you do not set your alarm, try setting it and again see what happens…

We’ve all read about electronic devices that can read and mimic the Fob signal to steal the car. Perhaps you have a neighbor who plays with electronics and has nothing better to do than spoof you…

Also, we’ve all read about crooks who want to break into a car without the alarm going off, so they “Walk By” and keep tripping the alarm. The owner goes out and checks their car, finds nothing wrong and resets the alarm. If it happens enough, the owner thinks the alarm is defective and just shuts it off. Now the crook has unhampered access to break into and/or steal the car…

If the alarm is not set by you and then goes off, something or someone is turning it on and then setting it off…

There are some sick people out there. I wrote about this a while back. In 1994, a neighbor’s teenage son was jealous of my '84 Harley. Even though he was somewhat of a friend of my son, I would not even let him sit on my bike. He had some piece of crap Honda motorcycle. He dropped it several times. The handle bars were bent, the mirrors were both broken, and a whole lot more was wrong with it, just because he did not care…

One night I woke up to the sound of sirens and flashing lights on my blinds. I jumped up, and saw my shed on fire; my Harley was inside. By the time the fire department got the fire out, the shed ws a smoking pile…

The fire inspector found traces of an accelerant and burnt scraps of newspaper and the police found foot prints in the landscaping around the shed and they took a casting.

The next morning I got a close look at the footprints, they were really big, size 13, and I recognized the pattern. My son and the kid had rolled paint on their sneakers and walked footprints on a board.

I took the board to the police department, the casting matched the painted print and they got a search warrant. The found the kid still at home, still in bed, and the sneakers, but the kicker was he still had a can of lighter fluid in his pants pocket with scraps of newspaper that matched the edition that the scraps under the shed were found.

He plea bargained as a juvenile and spend some time at a halfway house.

I had full coverage on the bike (and that’s another story as State Farm does not use Kelley Blue Book but some internal “Red” Book that was lower than Kelley…), but the saving grace was I had replaced various items on the bike over the years and I had kept everything (old mirrors, cables, original exhaust system, foot pegs, air cleaner, etc…) like most Harley owners do… But my homeowner’s insurance covered the shed and all its contents, including the old Harley parts, all of which were covered for their replacement cost.

I bought my Harley back and with the insurance money and the extra money from the old parts, I rebuilt the Harley (and customized it…) from the ground up.

I was still in the Air Force then and they agreed to transfer us to another state before that kid was released.

State Farm went after the family for the coverage. I later learned from another neighbor that the kid had broken into another neighbor’s home, but the family paid for the damage and reimbursed them for their loss, so the kid did not have a police record when he got caught for the fire.

I sure got off topic on that but it was to show that there are weirdos out there who might just think driving the OP crazy is the best thing they ever did.

Good Luck and I hope it is an easy fix.

Regarding the new car, I would seriously consider the possibility mentioned in the chat string I posted a link to. Many new cars have child occupancy alarms and a variety of conditions can set them off.

For the older ones, I have a hard time understanding how any level of EMI could set off an OEM alarm if it isn’t enabled. So this is a real mystery to me…

That’s common with early AFCI breakers. They can’t tell the difference between wires arcing and the brushes in a universal motor.

But wasn’t it a requirement in the National Electrical Code (NEC) in 1999?? OP’s house was built in 2021…

This is out in left field, but is there any place around your garage where critters can get in? Any signs of used critter food in your garage? Animals jumping on cars are a common reason why alarms on cars parked outside go off.

It would take a large animal to open a car door and cause the security alarm to sound.

And there are plenty of “Large Animals” out there…

Was that the last time he left his windows down in the forest?

I wonder if a bear could be tamed into a pet, like a dog, lives in the house, lays on the carpet as family watches tv?

Some people are crazy enough to try it… and it appears to work…

Of course, there are some just crazy enough to try, it does not work…

Bears are wild, unpredictable animals and they pose a danger to you and your loved ones. They are not domesticated animals, but are dangerous predators, there are a few states that you can get a special permit to own a bear, I don’t think that means keeping them in the house, they require a lot of room…

Years ago I had a Wolf -dog hybrid (Alaskan Malamute/Wolf), he was 125# and 5 1/2 long… He was the only outside dog we ever had and we have almost always had powerful dogs… He was great with our kids and loved kids of all ages, and he loved our little American Eskimo (smallest dog we ever owned), they played together very well… But he would catch and eat anything that came in the yard with fur or feathers… Woke up one morning and all we had was two feet and feathers from a rooster that kept coming around…lol… But I would never recommend anyone to ever own one unless they knew what they were getting into and how to handle something that powerful… Yes he would break his large cable about once a month, I bought 250’ spools at a time… Most of the time when he broke it, he was going after a rabbit or(?) and would bring it back to eat and I would redo his cable while he ate… lol

Neighbor has a game camera and says every night there are things roaming around and we are in town. I put a dead rabbit in the trailer to freeze until garbage day when I would put it in the trash instead of having it in the garage for a week. Went to get the little feller on garbage day and all that was left was a little fur. I don’t go walking around much at night anymore. Then ya got the pythons in Florida heading north at a fast pace. I suspect 20 below might stop them but they might adapt.

Waiting for my tires to cool to let some more air out.

A lot of Coyotes are loosing there hunting grounds with all the new growth we are having, so they have to travel further for food and now they have easier food to catch, you would do the same thing if you were them…
So we either need to stay out of there territory or learn to live with them…

Taking a risk of getting my post flagged:

I’ve often heard that the way you know coyotes are in your are is that when your neighborhood outdoor cats go missing coyotes are eating them. I live in a fairly dense suburban setting next to a state park. We have all kinds of wild animals including 5-foot tall rats! (Deer). There are also coyotes, black and black bears. The guy that developed this area lives here and swears that there is a lynx in the woods.

Cats, small dogs, small animals in general…

About the only thing around our late 60’s neighborhood is seeing about 15-20 Deer come through our yard most nights… All the newer developments around us in the last 10-20 years is driving them out…

Well, bringing it back to cars. (Sort of). in Florida besides all the creatures we have here. does anyone know how to keep the Cuban tree frogs off your car?
It seems they slime or something when they walk. I will wash my car, it will look great and the next morning, well let’s say I can tell the exact path it took. It will go up my fender, up the windshield, over the roof, then down to the trunk. turn around go back up and over the roof, down the windshield. and always makes its way under my hood by the wipers. then I put on a latex glove open the hood and the frog goes airborne into the woods leaving the glove full of slime. then back to washing the car again. what a PIA
