Brake noise?

I heard some noise which seems coming from the brakes. But the noise is always there even when I do not apply the brakes. I think if the noise relates to the brakes or the pads, there should be no noise until I apply the brakes, am I right? My car: Chevy Malibu, 1999. The brake light is not on. Thanks.

Actually, the little wear indicators embedded in the brake pads to signal brake wear will make noise when the brakes are not applied, and they will tend to silence themselves when you apply the brakes.

Whenever there is any question regarding the condition of your brakes, you need to take the car to a qualified mechanic for inspection of the entire braking system.
