I’ve never heard of the Smith system, but it sounds like a good one.
I had driver training in high school, in the service, and as a state employee. Something must have “stuck”, 'cause I’ve passed the half-century driving mark without an accident. I have no idea what it was.

The rest of the world uses the words interchangeably. You’re alone here.
It was a joke though. I don’t use the term crash if I can avoid it.
I didn’t use it much myself, but since my wife hit that free-range kayak and damaged her car I have been calling her “Crash.”
