Back to the 50s in St. Paul this weekend

Trying to figure out how to get there between rain drop but pretty wet. Still over 10,000 cars 64 and older. Sight to see.

Thought you meant night time temp!

I went once as a teenager and never understood the attraction. To each his own of course but, to me, classic car shows are like going to a restaurant but not being able to eat the food. ā€œHey, check out the grilled asparagus!ā€ You canā€™t start, drive, or ride in them. A bunch of people just looking at cars. Itā€™s like going to the track but instead of racing, we just look at race cars parked in the pits. Maybe Iā€™m missing something.

Itā€™s akin to visiting a museum, but not being allowed to take the paintings/sculptures home with you. Sometimes, itā€™s fun to just look at, and admire, various objects.

Well yeah you missed something. They are all varieties from half finished to primed to immaculate. All with their owners standing by. Some are for sale from Ā§5000 to $350,000. If thatā€™s what you want but is mostly just car people getting together. I once saw a Morris convertible there. A total mess with no top, so all kinds and vendors. Maybe if you didnā€™t grow up in that time period it has less meaning.

Corvettes and mustangs are not allowed if that tells you something.

That sounds like an enjoyable afternoon outing. With luck, the rain will let up.

Good analogy. The difference for me is that the very essence of a car is the sound, smell and feel of it - none of which you get to experience looking at it parked. Again, to each his own,

Yeah, I was born in the 70ā€™s. I have been around cars and racing my entire life and have friends into street rods. Just not that interesting to me for whatever reason. If you go, enjoy and have a great time!

The nearby County Seat has a Cruise-In Car Show every Friday night, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Sometimes the car owners will start their carā€™s engine so that people can hear it. Occasionally, they will allow people to sit in their cars.

Classic car shows arenā€™t about the power, the speed or the handling, all of which were anemic by todayā€™s standards, but an appreciation of the design, the time and the efforts of the person who made the effort to maintain these vehicles.

A V12 Lincoln Limo is a miracle on wheels, the beauty of a Jag XKE, the fun of an early Mustang convertible or a Meyers Dune Buggy and a time when affinity between a Mustang, Camaro or Barracuda was more important than Race, Religion or Political affiliation and donā€™t get me started on ā€œWingsā€ on a car!.

So go to the show, have a nice weekend, chat with the owners and enjoy yourself.

Good point, and your observation is consistent with the trend of classic cars in their original configuration are generally valued higher than those with non-original power and handling improvements.

Called off. Apparently the Back to the 50s event will be Nov 15.

Web site just says no Mustangs, which make sense since it for '64 and older cars. Maybe folks trying to sneak in '64 1/2 Mustangsā€¦

Shortly after my post 3 hours ago I checked the weather. Rain and 92F. That seems more like Louisiana than Minnesota.

That is on short notice, Bingo is probably halfway there.

I found something different: Minnesota Street Rod Association Back to the '50ā€™s weekend.

Are you hitchhiking?

Itā€™s on the fair grounds so no roof. Getting there is no problem. Walking around in the rain is less fun. Plus a lot of folks pull their cars out in bad weather. Iā€™ll see what itā€™s like on Saturday.

Exactly! Great analogy. You can look at all that sumptuous food but not consume a single calorie. Diet intact. Car shows the same- you can look at all the fantastic looking cars but it didnā€™t cost you a dime :grinning:

What I got sick of was the cruise nights. To this day I cannot stand 50s music anymore because of the overexposure. Play something else!

Car shows often have a companion swap meet. Lots of parts to peruse and I was always looking for something. I even bought a couple cars from the corral area where people had them for sale.

Someone who posts on Cartalk Community that does not like car shows - as Spock would say ā€˜it does not computeā€™.

As for the music at the shows I often wonder if their is a rule that they can only have 10 songs on the play list.

I think it used to be 1964-1/2 and older. No mustangs or Camaros. I think street machine nationals are in July?

The local Cruise In Car Show takes place on a city avenue. Thankfully, there is no music.

As far as the temperature, hope it cools off for the Fair.
