Back to the 50s in St. Paul this weekend

We have car shows, everyone wants to throw the hoodup and show off the chrome plated valve covers. I would prefer to see the car with the hood down to appreciate the styling.

I like to see the engine compartment and look under the vehicle at the suspension set up and talk about the mods done to it, interior includedā€¦

If it is all stock, been there got that t-shirt, moving on to a non stock oneā€¦
But I can appreciate about any modifications to a vehicle, just like some styles better than othersā€¦
As already said, to each there own, I donā€™t have a problem if John Smith loves Concours dā€™Elegance shows, and I understand what goes into one of those vehicles and respect it, just not my cup of teaā€¦

I asked a classic Ford pickup truck owner at a car show to pop the hood so I could eyeball the engine compartment. He told me the truck had recently undergone a pro-body-shop treatment, including fresh paint, which is presumably why he decided to show it. It certainly looked nice. Owning a similar truck, Iā€™m aware of a couple of places that problematic rust forms in these truckā€™s engine compartment. Sure enough, there it was, but the problems were covered up with new paint. I pointed this out to the owner b/c it was only a minor problem, but would certainly become a major one later, if left unfixed. The owner wasnā€™t very thankful I pointed this out ā€¦ lol ā€¦

A hit at the party. They give away donā€™t touch signs for people that want to touch and feel $20,000 paint jobs. I guess they could include donā€™t make rude comments but kinda goes without saying. Does this dress make me look fat?

Lucky you didnā€™t get shot for insulting this guys truck. That wasnā€™t very nice of you.

Are you going to share your car show pictures?

From exposure to snowy Colorado roads.

And you are surprised at that ? And LOL does not apply .

Interesting. Personally Iā€™d appreciate if someone politely pointed out a subtle impending problem w/my truck that was easy to repair now, but could become much bigger later if left unrepaired.

I might not appreciate someone pointing out obvious cosmetic problems, like the 50 year old engine is covered in greasy gunk ā€¦ lol ā€¦

I only took one of a great 59 ford convertible at the car sale lot. No idea how to get it off my phone. In that rose color. I like the teal better but ya take what you can get.

I guess it just brought back memories. In 6th grade on school patrol the turkey plant manager used to drive by in a new 59 sedan every morning in the teal. Then following right behind was the daughter with an identical convertible. I guess thatā€™s when I thought Iā€™d better strive to be a turkey plant manager to have a couple cars like that or else date his daughter. Actually I thought it was a ridiculous display of privilege but I liked the cars.

The guy probably spent thousands of dollars fixing up his truck, and you pick it apart.
And you expected him to thank you?

If I had spent a considerable sum on my truckā€™s body work and paint, Iā€™d appreciate someone with experience on the same truck politely pointing out a subtle problem that if not promptly addressed would cause me to spend even more money. If I didnā€™t want any comments, I would leave the truck at home, not take it to the car show.

The next time you offer restoration tips, bring your own truck as an example.

The guy had the hood closed and you had to ask him to open it so you could inspect it.

I was referring to this post.

If folks want you to see the engine they will have the hood up or the trunk open. Some will even have mirrors underneath so you can inspect the chassis. But you wouldnā€™t walk around with a mirror.

Maybe if he wanted to offer advice about replacing lower control arm bushings.

That indeed would be pretty rude patron behavior. But if I entered a vehicle in a car show Iā€™d expect many of the patrons to want to see the engine. If I was asked by a patron, and refused to open the hood, wouldnā€™t that be rude on my part?

George , you just canā€™t accept that you were the rude person .

Are you saying this is bad advice? When trying to remove suspension bushes within an arm and you lack a press, you could drill holes through the flexible rubber section, then press press the bush out with a vice and socket?
