Automatic headlight activation/deactivation

I recently purchased a 1998 Chevy S-10 pick-up truck that, in addition to automatic daytime running lights, has a sensor that turns on the headlights when it is “dark”. The problem is I am unable to switch to parking lights or turn the headlights off completly when needed or desired. Is this normal or is there a problem with my switch?

Thanks

Short of pulling the fuse, I don’t think these lights can be deactivated.

If you have a dome override button you can push it four times in a row and it will turn off the lights. Then the switch will work for parking lights and headlights. The override will shut them off at night too, so watch out if you think you are pushing the cargo light button. When you turn the engine off, things return to normal except for the dome light, which can be reset with the override. There is a chime that sounds when the lights go out.
