I own a 1998 chevy s-10 and I am (for lack of a better term) broke! the alternator went out on it this week, and I am searching for a cheap alternator and some directions for installation. any tips on where to start?

No offense, but how did you come to the conclusion the alternator is bad?
There are external things that can cause the alternator not to work. You may want to take your unit off and have a place like autozone test it to see if it really is defective. They will test it for no charge. If it is bad you may be able to get a used one at a salvage yard but I would recommend you get a rebuilt one, even if you have to borrow some money from a friend to do it. Replacing one is pretty easy to do. Be sure to disconnect the negative battery terminal first before removing the wires to it.
