Acura 2000 TL transmission woes

118,000 miles, check engine light turned on. Haven’t felt any changes with the feel of the car or trans. Trusty mechanic was going to follow the protocol and replace 2 valves to check if it would solve the problem. Dealer told him from their experience it ends up being the whole transmission and just to replace. Mechanic says rebuild, Dealer says replace. Not sure what to do…

What are the code numbers? (Eg.PO1234)

the code came up PO740. want to add some maintenance history as well: bought the car in '03 from certified pre-owned dealer with 39k miles. All service from then until 100k was done at dealer. tranny fluid changed at 62k, at 65k dealer performed tranny inspection, at 90k did transmission fluid service, and at 104k replaced timing belt in anticipation of it possibly failing soon.

At 88500 miles my 2001 Acura 3.2TL (in the last week or so) did something similar and worse. Doing 50 mile per hour the transmission decellerated, abruptly. It felt as a car had hit our car from the rear, the car bucked. If you know how it feels when you jerk the clutch on standard car, thats how it felt. Later the engine light came on, the TCS light came on and the D5 light flashed, the RPM never came back to 200 RPM it stayed at 4000 RPM. The dealer has said it needs a replacement transmission $4200 worth. Be carefull if this happens while you are driving and some idiot is reading your bumper you all end up in a big accident.

Park them over in the north-west corner along the fence with the rest of them and bring the keys and plates back to the office…
