97 Ford Escort won't start (fuel line problem?)

Most likely I tried to edit it in and messed it up and it didn’t save. Anyone else is free to mention it I don’t care. Not too long ago I wrote a long list of ways that car makers have changed designs to make cars cheaper and of lower quality, and it was deleted! I’m still mad about that.

My dudes, the timing belt was broken. Got the kit, got everything apart.

Biggest pain was cleaning the surface for the new water pump gasket, but I’ve got the pump in and should be able to finish up the rest tomorrow.

This has been a learning experience.

Good luck. There are a couple of YouTube’s out there but the timing marks didn’t seem clear. Hope you have a book or know what to do anyway. One guy took the front wheel off for access and bumped the starter to break the balancer loose. I’ve only done one chain and it wasn’t fun.

I replaced the water pump on my Corolla recently. Pump is clam-shell configured. Job involves replacing the half that has moving parts, and re-using the other half. I concur w/you, big part of the job was cleaning the gasket surface where the two halves mate. The surface where the pump mates to the engine not difficult to clean though, o-ring interface. Took some experimenting to figure out a way to prevent o-ring from falling out during the install though.

Suggest when you get the new timing belt on and timing marks aligned to manually rotate the engine a few times, listening for any weird noises and feeling for any catches in the rotation. Should be smooth as silk if plugs are removed. Just in case some internal engine damage occurred as a result of the timing belt break.

That’s how I solve those prolems

After a loooong wait for the silicone to cure (I only waited 23 hrs because they haven’t invented the marshmallow test that I can’t fail), and a very nervous moment behind the wheel . . . it started right up.

Thanks again for everybody’s help and advice.
