51 - Injector Circuit
34 - Knock sensor
The problem I am having is this. I start the van and take it for a drive. I turn off the van to go into someplace. I turn it back on to leave and the engine isn’t running right. Feels like one of the cylinders isn’t firing. The Check engine light comes on, the van idles at just over 500rpms when in gear and about 700 when in neutral or park. I can still drive it around without it stalling.
Turning the engine on or off doesn’t change anything. The only thing that seems to correct the issue is to let the engine cool back down.
Today I put some Fuel Injector cleaner (STP w/ Jet Fuel) into the gas tank, hoping to correct the problem.
I’m looking for input on the issue. Hopefully someone who has had a similar problem can let me know how they corrected it.
From the 51 - Injector Circuit DTC, I would assume that the ECM is detecting an open or shorted circuit to one of the injectors. When the problem is happening, take a mechanics stethescope, wooden dowl, or vacuum tube and listen to each injector to see if you can hear its clicking. If there is one that is not clicking, with the engine off and ignition switch off remove the wiring plug to that injector; clean the prongs and the plug connectors with a Q-tip and contact cleaner; reinstall; and see if that cures the problem. If that injector still does not click, you are going to have to troubleshoot the circuits from the power distribution system and to the computer.
Also to help other responders, please indicate the configuration and size of this engine, for example V6 - 3.0 liter.
Hope that helps. Please post back if you solve this problem
Ah yes, sorry bout that. V6 - 3.0L, 1994 Villager GS.
So far all I have done is put Fuel Injector cleaner in the gas. Haven’t run much of the gas through the engine since my drives to work are pretty short. The van ran fine to work and then back home after an 8 hour shift. Although, I got home today at 2pm, with the temp outside at 100 degrees. After the van sat for 4 hours I went out with the temp still about 95 degrees. As soon as I started it up the problem was evident again.
I will give your suggestions a try after my work week has finished (wednesday) and I have time to take it somewhere. Thank you very much for your response. I will give updates to the situation as they come.
I have a '95 villager with 51 also. Front three injectors checked out fine, back 3 hard to get to (too cheap to have mechanic take engine apart to check them). When the outside temperature was hot, check engine light came on at start up but went off after a few minutes. Now that the temp is cooler, chk engine light is always on, with rough driving. If it were a connection problem, would temperature change the connectivity? Or is there the possiblity that something is wrong with the injectors themselves?
