My BIL used to cruise timber in SC for a lumber company. It was all low country work and there were a lot of swamps. He said snakes and gators were not a problem if you didn’t go near them, except for water moccasins. He said they would swim across the pond at him once they became aware of him.
He came across rattlesnakes too but they were not as dangerous. One time he walked past a tree and looked to the side and there was a rattlesnake in a crook at head height. The snake just laid there and he passed. He immediately went to his truck and spent the rest of the afternoon sitting and trembling while he waited for the rest of the crew to finish up.
