2019 Hyundai Santa Fe - OBD Splitter

Hi. Thanks for reading.

I went for an emissions inspection and the technician needed to plug a diagnostics cable into the car’s OBD port. Please see the picture below. My OBD port looks like it has a splitter in it. Neither the technician nor I could unplug the splitter to access the OBD port directly.

Even though the splitter has a secondary OBD port attached, the technician wasn’t having it. He said he must plug in directly to the original OBD port.

The OBD splitter seems like pretty cheap plastic and we were both concerned that brute force would break all the plastic bits holding it in place.

Any advice on how to dislodge the OBD adapter or what to do here?

Thanks!

If you have to, break it off.

If you need an OBDII splitter, replace it.

They’re not that expensive.

The two plugs look like they each have a single black wire leading out of them. Where do those black wires go?

I’ll have to check the black wires

Did you purchase this vehicle recently ? If so I wonder if the dealer put a tracking and disable device in the vehicle ?

You need to have this done. Pull the thing out, Or Fail the inspection. It’s not like its bolted in. Those are your only options.

I expect that’s b/c an unscrupulous person (not you) could install electronics in the splitter in an attempt to trick the emissions checking computer. As posted above, you’ll have to figure out a way to remove the splitter gadget from the car’s obd ii socket. Try to do this so if something breaks, it is the splitter, not the car’s socket. Good lighting and a dentist’s mirror might help to find a way to pop it free. I wouldn’t want that gadget connected to my car anyway, might confuse or even damage the car’s internal computer network.

My first thought when I saw the photo was that it could be part of a buy-here-pay-here disabling system.

same here. excellent thought @VOLVO-V70

Ignition interrupter systems used by finance companies are usually located within the dash, out of reach from the customer.

This looks like a simple monitor used on fleet vehicles or by insurance companies.

These devices must be removed before presenting the vehicle for an emissions inspection, failing to do so can result in a rejected inspection.
