can I convert my 2018 tundra to a plug in hybrid ?
Yes, trade it in.
With enough money and fabrication anything is possible.
2022 was first tundra hybrid. So, there ya go.
A noted above, sure, with enough money. But why? May not be legal in your state. Is there a category for this at a custom truck show? I would much rather look at a pristine 1959 El Camino than a customized Tundra.
That’s true, but the computerized interface between the ICE engine, the electric motors, and the charging mechanism is not going to be cheap, and may actually be difficult to obtain. Then, there is the question of who will install and test the additional components in order to ensure that they work properly, and that they don’t set the truck on fire.
There is also the question of how/where/by whom the extra batteries will be securely-placed and wired to the electric motors and the computerized interface.
I assume the OP knows that a PHEV has a lot more batteries than a “regular” hybrid, albeit a lot less than an EV.
Unless there is a pre-packaged kit out there to do this (very doubtful) or you (or the person you’ll pay tens of thousands of dollars to) are a combination electrical/mechanical/powertrain engineer (in which case you wouldn’t be asking), there is not a practical way to do this and end up with a usable day-to-day vehicle.
You might be able to buy two Tundra PHEVs for the cost of conversion. There will be a lot of fabrication involved to locate the batteries
… and, as of today, depending on their source, those batteries might have a 104% tariff levied on them.
How is ur life improved by having a hybrid truck?
The idea is usually to save money on gas. IMO the money saved on gasoline is never worth the extra spent on a more fuel efficient vehicle.
I don’t think those exist, just hybrid versions.
I’ve always believed (and most people around where I live agree) that the point of a hybrid is to use less gasoline. The money part is secondary, and often not considered.
I’ve saved a whole heap of money on gas ever since I bought a PHEV. Obviously, the actual gas mileage will vary, depending on whether one activates the ICE, or not.
Most of my driving is done in EV mode, and I typically drive 900-1000 miles on 5-6 gallons of gas. My personal best was 1,745 miles on 6.68 gallons of gas. Just so nobody thinks I’m bragging, I’ll leave it to others to do the math on that.
Of course, I do have to pay for the electricity that I use to recharge it at home, but because I am a member of a Community Solar program, I get a 20% discount on my electricity without installing my own solar panels.
A couple of months after I bought the vehicle, I calculated my cost of electricity vs miles driven, and it was less than half of what I would have spent on gas with my previous vehicle, which got 24-29 mpg.
Tundra is full size, should be adequate room in the bed for the batteries.
But considering where the question was originally posted, highly unlikely we will hear back from the OP.
