While getting my 5,000 service for my Toyota Rav4 Hybrid, I asked the service rep how the navigation system is updated. With my Garmin Nuvi, I periodically update it by connecting to my computer. I asked whether Toyota updates its navigation system when the car undergoes servicing. I was very surprised by his response: He said that the updating is done by purchasing a disk, which comes out every year. The cost of the disk is $180.00! Whaaaaaaat??? Glad I still hung onto my Garmin!
I happily use my Google Maps app on my phone and have had no issues with navigation. With the number of good GPS units and cellphone apps being reliable, I’m not sure why car manufacturers keep offering their onboard GPS units
