2017 Kia Forte 5-Door - Dead engine with loan to pay

Bought this car in September of 2023 (6 months ago). This week my car threw a rod and destroyed the engine block. The vehicle has been maintained and only has 64K miles on it. Of course, the kia warranty drops to 60K miles for second owners, so now I’m looking at a nearly $10K repair for a car that is worth less than $15K and still owed on for 4-5 years.

There is a class action settlement that may apply to your vehicle if it has the 2.0-liter engine and if the knock sensor-rod knock detection software has been installed prior to the engine failure. The settlement includes a 15 year/150,000-mile warranty extension on the engine block and crankshaft.

You might try a NHTSA recall VIN search too. Google that term for the link.
